Anatomy 3: Male Reproductive Anatomy Flashcards
What makes up the trigone?
2 ureteric orfices
Internal urethral orfice
What is the bladder wall formed by?
Detrusor muscle
What is the role of the neck of the male bladder detrusor muscle?
Forms the internal urethral sphincter muscle which contracts during ejaculation to prevent retrograde ejaculation
Explain the development of the testes
- Originate on the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity
- Descend through the anterior abdominal wall via the inguinal canal
What is the function of the vas deferens?
Connect the testis to the urethra
What is meant by the term “spermatic cord”?
The 3 layers of “coverings’ gained as the testis passes through the inguinal canal and the structures contained within
What is a hydrocele?
Excess fluid in the tunica vaginalis
Describe the journey of sperm from the testis?
- Produced in the seminiferous tubules
- Pass to the rete testis
- Then into head of epididymis
- Epididmyis becomes the Vas deferens
- The Vas deferens passes superiorly in the spermatic cord to deep inguinal ring
- At deep inguinal ring, the vas deferens turns medially into the pelvis
- Travels posterior to the bladder
Where is the epidermis located?
At the posterior aspect of the testis
Where can the Vas deferens be palpated?
Within the spermatic cord
What is the arterial blood supply to the testis?
Arteries from lateral aspect of abdominal aorta
Where does the left testicular vein drain to?
The left testicular vein drains to the left renal vein
Where does the right testicular vein drain to?
The IVC
Where does the blood supply and drained of the testis pass though?
The deep inguinal ring
What is the role of the Bulbourethral (Cowper’s) gland?
Mucus secretion, lubricates urethra and neutralises acidity
What is the role of the prostatic urethra?
- Drains urine from the bladder
- Passes semen in ejaculation
What is the inferior aspect of the prostate gland in contact with?
The levator ani muscle
Where do most cancers of the prostate gland arise?
On the peripheral zone
What are the features of the Corpus Cavernosum?
Posterior, both right and left
Transmits the deep arteries of the penis
What are the features of the Corpus Spongiosum?
Anteriorly
Transmits the spongy urethra
Expands distally to form the glans penis
Where is the Corpus Spongiosum contained?
Within the Bulb of the penis
Where is the Corpus Cavernosum contained?
Within the Crura of the Penis (x2 on either side)
What is the blood supply to the penis?
- Via the deep arteries of the penis
- Branches from the internal pudendal artery (from internal iliac)
What is the blood supply to the scrotum?
Via the internal pudendal and branches from external iliac artery
Where is the lymphatic drainage from the scrotum and most of the penis (not glans)?
Drains to the superficial inguinal lymph nodes -superficial fascia of groin
Where is the lymphatic drainage from the testes?
Drains to the lumbar nodes- around the abdominal aorta
What supplies the Vas Deferens?
The artery to the vas, derived from the superior vesical artery
What is the prostate supply and drainage?
-Supplied by branches from the inferior vesicle artery and drained by a plexus of prostatic veins to the internal iliac vein
