Anatomy Flashcards
What is the function of the lungs
To store and cleanse inhaled air
What is the function of the trachea
The trachea is the windpipe through which air flows between the lungs, the vocal organs and the nasal and oral cavities
What is the function of the larynx
Houses the vocal folds and the cartilage needed to move them as well as supporting muscles
What shape is the larynx
Cylindrical
Where does the larynx rest?
Above the top of the trachea
What else is the larynx known as?
The Adam’s Apple
T/F: The larynx is more prominently displayed in women
False; it is more prominent in men (Adam’s Apple)
What is the larynx composed of?
Cartlidges held together by ligaments
What is the trachea made up of?
Cartilaginous rings
What household object can the trachea be compared to?
A vacuum hose
Where does the trachea sit?
Above the lungs and below the larynx
Where is the cricoid cartilage located?
Just above the trachea
Where can you feel the cricoid cartilage?
In the notch in the centre of the collarbones when tilting one’s head back (it is the larger ring that you feel protruding forward)
T/F: you have one artyenoid cartilage
False; they are a pair
What shape are the arytenoid cartilage?
Pyramid
Where is the arytenoid cartilage located?
Atop the rear of the cricoid cartilage
What is the function of the arytenoid cartilage?
To move the vocal folds and produce a variety of sounds
Where is the thyroid cartilage located?
Just above the cricoid cartilage
What shape is the thyroid cartilage?
Plough-shaped
What is the function of the thyroid cartilage?
To act as a shield for vocal folds
What shape is the hyoid bone?
Horseshoe shaped
Where is the hyoid bone located?
Behind the chin
What is the function of the hyoid bone?
It supports the muscles of the tongue above
Where is the hyoid bone located?
Behind the chin and connected by muscles to the larynx below
What are the vocal folds?
Two flaps of tissue attached to the cartilages of the larynx
What are the vocal folds made up of?
2 bands of ligament and a muscle
What is the opening between the vocal folds called?
The glottis
T/F: Vocal chords and vocal folds are two seperate pieces of anatomy
False; chords are the outdated term for folds
Define glottal stop
When the glottis is blocked using the vocal folds
What is the area below the vocal folds called?
The subglottal
What is the area above the larynx called?
Supralaryngeal
What is the pharynx
The breathing tube from the larynx to the nasal cavity
What is another word for the pharynx
The throat
What are the three sub-parts of the pharynx
- Nasal Pharynx
- Oral Pharynx
- Laryngeal Pharynx
What is the function of the jaw?
Contraction through elevating the madible and bringing the teeth into contact
Where is the soft palette located?
Behind the tonsils and hard palette
List the 6 upper articulators
- Upper lip
- Upper teeth
- Alveolar Ridge
- Hard Palette
- Soft palette/velum
- Pharyngeal wall
List the three lower articulators
- Lower lip
- Lower teeth
- Tongue
T/F: Vowels are a mix of voiced and voiceless
False; typically vowels are voiced
T/F: Vocal folds do not vibrate when we whisper
True
