Q

Define pulmonic egressive sounds and how they are produced

A

When you breathe in, muscles expand in the lungs, lowering the sub-glottal air pressure
By contracting the lungs, sub-glottal aur pressure is increased
PESS make use of this out-flowing air

Q

Explain the glottalic mechanism

A

Your larynx moves up and down when muscles contract and using the glottalic mechanism, the glottis then acts like a piston, pulling and pushing air

15
Q

How are glottalic ingressive implosives made?

A
  1. Larynx lowers, decreading amount of pressure of air above glottis
  2. small amount of air enters mouth
  3. voicing occurs as air crosses glottis

Q

When do implosives occur?

A

At any PoA for plosives

17
Q

When are velaric egressives used in speech?

A

Never

18
Q

What are velaric ingressives called?

A

Clicks

19
Q

How are velaric ingressives (clicks) made?

A
  1. two simultaneous closures at velum and in oral cavity
  2. a vacuum is created between the two closures using the tongue
  3. the front closure is released so that air rushes in
