anatomy Flashcards
anatomy defn
study of structure
functional anatomy
what are those parts called + what do they do
median plane
imaginary line dividing animal into LHS + RHS
medial + lateral meanings
medial = towards median plane
lateral = away from median plane
dorsal + ventral
towards back + belly (or corresponding surfaces head + tail)
cranial + caudal
towards cranium + tail
along body length
directional descriptive terms on head
rostral = towards nose tip
caudal = towards tail
directional description on limbs
proximal = near body trunk; distal = away from
above carpus (wrist, fl)/tarsus (ankle, hl) = cranial + caudal
below = dorsal (front bit closer head) + palmar (FL)/plantar (HL)
axial + abaxial
Axial = toward longitudinal central axis of limb
Abaxial = away from longitudinal central axis of limb
flexion + extension
flexion reduces angle bet 2 parts
extension increases angle
refer to each specific joint
abduction + adduction
abduction = moving away from median plane
adduction = moving towards median plane
supination + pronation
supine + prone
turning palm upwards + downwards
also applies to whole body in same concept
ventral/sternal + dorsal recumbency
communication in anatomy
joining together, how this are connected
intercostal space
space bet ribs
