Anatomical Position Flashcards
What is anatomical position?
standard position used in antomy and clinical practice to allow accurate and consistent description of one body part in relation to another
What is the anatomic position?
- head - directed forward + eyes looking into distnace 2. body - upright + legs together + directed forwards 3. palms - turned forwards + thumbs laterally + arms to side
What are the anatomical planes?
- median saggital 2. coronal/frontal 3. transverse/horizontal
Describe the median saggittal plane?
vertical plane passing throug midline of the body - front to back
Describe the coronal/frontal plane?
vertical plane perpendicular to saggital planes - shoulder to shoulder
Describe horizontal/transverse planes?
lie at right angles to both saggital and frontal planes
Superior/cranial?
toward the head - upper part of structure or body : above
Inferior/caudal?
toward lower part of a structure of the body : below
Anterior/ventral?
toward or at the front of the body
Posterior/dorsal?
toward or at the back of the body
Medial?
towards the midline of the body - inner side
Lateral?
away from the midline - outer side
Intermediate?
between a more medial and a more lateral structure
Proximal?
closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Distal?
farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Superficial/external?
toward or at body surface
Deep/internal?
away from the body surface - more internal
Rostral?
towards the nose
Prone?
face down
Supine?
face up
Bilateral?
on both sides
Ipsilateral?
on the same side of the body
Contralateral?
on the opposite side of the body
Extension?
movement increasing the angle between 2 body parts
Flexion?
movement decreasing the angle between 2 body parts
Abduction?
movement away from the midline
Adduction?
movement towards the midline
External rotation?
rotation away from the midline
Internal rotation?
rotation towards the midline
Dorsiflexion?
- hand - movement of hand/fingers toward the dorsal side 2. foot - movement of toes/foot towards the shin
Plantarflexion?
movement of the foot/toes downward toward the sole
Name the anatomical sections?
- transverse 2. longitudinal 3. oblique
Describe the transverse section?
a part cut crosswise - width wise
Describe the longitudinal section?
a cut made along the long axis - length wise
Describe the oblique section?
a cut that lies on a slightly oblique plane
