Anatomic Terminology (M1) Flashcards
Standard anatomic position
Body upright
Legs slightly apart with feet facing forward and flat on the ground
Arms at the side with palms facing forward
Eyes and head directed straight ahead
What is the difference between a body plane and section?
Body plane: imaginary line through the body
Body section: slices through the body that are created by the plane
Sagittal plane
Divides the body/organ vertically into right and left sides
Midsagittal/median plane
Vertical plane runs directly down the middle of the body
Parasagittal plane
Vertical plane divides the body into unequal right and left sides
Frontal (coronal) plane
Divides body/organ into anterior (front) and posterior (rear) portion
Transverse (cross-sectional) plane
Divides body/organ horizontally into upper and lower portions
“cross sections”
Suture between the frontal and parietal bones
Coronal suture
Suture between the parietal and occipital bones
Lambdoid suture
What does the dorsal body cavity consist of
Brain and spinal cord
What does the ventral body cavity consist of
Thoracic: lungs, trachea, great vessels, heart, esophagus
Abdominal: major GI tract organs, spleen, kidney
Pelvic: terminal GI tract organs, urinary bladder, reproductive organs
What are ventral body cavities lined with
Serous membranes
What are the 3 components of serous membranes
Internal visceral layer: covers external surface of organs
Serous cavity: potential space that contains a small amount of fluid
External parietal layer: covers internal wall of body cavity
What are fenestrations
Small openings/windows
foramen
short passage
