Analgesics Flashcards
Aspirin is an __ and ____
antipyretic and anti-inflammatory
Varying concentrations of aspirin result in?
Low concentrations- COX 1 inhibitors (antiplatelet)
High concentrations- inhibits COX 2 as well as COX 1
Dose dependent action, irreversible inactivation
Aspirins actions on prostanoids ?
Prostanoids are COX.
Has anti-inflammatory properties at high concentrations, irreversibly changes COX 2. Non selective.
Side effects of aspirin
Peptic ulcers, increased bleeding time, renal toxicity.
What is salicylism, and how is it treated?
Tinnitus, deafness, mental confusion.
Treated with charcoal (absorbs drug if still in GI Tract), administration of sodium bicarbonate and forced alkaline diuresis. Haemodialysis should be considered in severe overdose
Celcoxib is used in? Special story?
Anti-inflammatory, selective COX-2 inhibitor.
Stop production - cause CVD?
Morphine mechanism of action acts on?
Morphine is an opioid. Causes analgesia and euphoria by mimicking endogenous peptides and reducing activity of dorsal horn neurons.
Morphine overdose side effects.
Unable to be used in?
Don’t use in migraines.
Respiratory depression, constipation, tolerance and dependence.
Heroin
Morphine analogue, crosses BBB more readily than morphine
Codeine
Weak morphine analogue
Overdose of Morphine treated with this.
Naloxone.
Naloxone is :
Competitive receptor antagonist used for opioid overdose
Pethidine
Fast acting synthetic opioid, short duration of action, used especially in children and pregnancy.
Weak synthetic opioid with long duration. Used to treat heroin withdrawal
Methadone
Synthetic Steroids name three:
Prednisolone
Dexmethasone
Betamethasone
