Anaesthetic machine Flashcards
what are the three tasks an anaesthetic machine must fulfil?
- supply oxygen
- supply anaesthetic agent
- remove waste carbon dioxide
what is an oxygen generator?
a device that concentrates oxygen from ambient air by selectively removing nitrogen to provide an oxygen-enriched gas stream
what colour is the cylinder and shoulder of an oxygen cylinder?
cylinder - black
shoulder - white
what connects a cylinder to an anaesthetic machine?
by a yoke
what is a bodok seal?
a circular washer that maintains a gas tight seal between the cylinder and yoke
what is a schrader socket and probe?
for piped oxygen
- same probe, same socket can only be used
what is a pressure gauge?
- attached to each cylinder yoke
- gives an indication of how much gas remains
how is nitrous oxide present in a cylinder?
as a gas and a liquid
what does the reduction valve do?
Regulates the pressure
where do the two pipes of oxygen go?
- to the emergency (flush) button which bypasses the anaesthetic delivery
- to the flow meter
what is a flow meter?
- controls the amount of gas going to the patient
- comprises of a calibrated vertical glass tube
what is a vaporiser?
- where volatile anaesthetic liquids evaporate to form a concentrated anaesthetic gas
- dilutes with oxygen
what is passive scavenging?
- simplest form
- wide bore plastic tube carries waste gases from APL valve to a hole in the outside wall
what is activated charcoal scavenging?
- removes waste gases by a process called adsorption
what is active scavenging?
- waste gases are drawn out
