A
Horrifying weapons were being developed during the Cold War, neither side would fight if destruction was mutually assured.

A
Claus von Clausevitz, Prussian military strategist, warned against unlimited violence as war is just a continuation of political activity.
Eisenhower questioned in 1954 what would be done in a world after nuclear war.

A
- Growing hostility.
- Defend country + superiority.
- Fearful over Berlin, China takeover 1949, Korea war 1950, US develops hydrogen bomb.

A

- Technological advancements = success.
- Khrushchev tells Prime Minister’s wife in 1956 nuclear bombs are capable of hitting Britain. U-R photos show no lead, but Kennedy out of fear spends £50b on military expense by 1962.

- US money to scientists, manufacturers, and armed forces. 30 million with jobs. Eisenhower couldn’t avoid military-industrial complex.
