Amount of substance Flashcards
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus
What is the relative isotopic mass?
Mass of 1 isotope compared to 1/12 mass of 1 atom of C-12
What is the relative atomic mass?
Mass of 1 atom compared to 1/12 mass of 1 atom of C-12
What is the relative molecular mass?
Average mass of a molecule compared to 1/12 mass of 1 atom of C-12
What is mass spectroscopy for?
It is used to determine the mass of the atoms and molecules by measuring masses of components.
What are the steps of mass spectroscopy?
- Vapourisation
- Ionisation
- Acceleration - cations attracted to negative plates
- Deflection - size depends on ratio of ions mass to charge
- Detection - current generated - proportional to abundance of each ion
What is the empirical formula?
The simplest ratio of atoms of each element in a substance
What is the molecular formula?
The number of atoms of each element in 1 molecule
