Acids and redox Flashcards
What is an acid?
It releases H+ ions in aq solution.
Proton donor.
What is the difference between a strong and weak acid?
A strong acid releases all H atoms in solutions as H+ - completely dissociates.
A weak acid only releases some H - partially dissociates.
What determines the degree of dissociation?
- Strength of O-H bond
- Stability of anion (stable, increases degree of dissociation)
What is pH?
The measure of the concentration of H+ ions.
As pH increases by 1, the concentration of H+ decreases by a factor of 10.
What is a base?
A substance that neutralises an acid to form a salt.
Proton acceptor.
What is an alkali?
Soluble base, releasing OH- ions.
What is the general formula of neutralisation?
H+ + OH- –> H2O
What is the neutralisation equation?
Acid + alkali –> salt + water
What is the reaction with carbonates?
Acid + carbonate –> salt + water + CO2
What is a titration?
A technique used to accurately measure the volume of 1 solution that reacts exactly with another solution.
What is a titration used for?
Finding concentration of a solution, finding purity of a substance, identify unknown chemicals.
What is the reaction with metal?
Metal + acid –> salt + H2
How to remember redox?
