Amiodarone Hydrochloride Flashcards
Presentation of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
Pre-filled syringe containing 300 milligrams Amiodarone in 10ml
Indications for use of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
Cardiac arrest where a shockable rhythm is discovered, if unresponsive to defibrillation administer amiodarone after the 3rd shock and an additional bolus depending on age to unresponsive VF or pulseless VT following the 5th shock.
Actions of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
Antiarrhythmic; lengthens cardiac action potential and therefore effective refractory period, prolongs interval on ECG
Blocks sodium and potassium channels in cardiac muscle
Acts to stabilise and reduce electrical irritability of cardiac muscle
Contra-indications of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
No contra-indications in the context of the treatment of cardiac arrest
Side effects of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
Bradycardia
Vasodilation causing hypotension, flushing
Bronchospasm
Arrhythmias - Torsades de pointes
Drug code for Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
AMO
How should Amiodarone Hydrochloride be administered?
Intravenous/intraosseous - administer as a rapid bolus
Administer into large vein as extravasation can cause burns
Follow administration with a 0.9% sodium chloride flush
Initial dose of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
300 milligrams (after 3rd shock)
Can a repeat dose of Amiodarone Hydrochloride be given?
150 milligrams
Dose interval of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
After 5th shock
Volume of Amiodarone Hydrochloride given?
10ml
Is there a maximum dose of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
450 milligrams
What is the standard dose of Amiodarone Hydrochloride?
Adults
300 milligrams in 10 ml
At what age can a standard dose of Amiodarone Hydrochloride be given?
≥12 years and adult
