description
aminophylline is a respiratory stimulant; it has mild diuretic properties and positive chronotropic and inotropic effects ( in large doses)
mechanism of action
relaxes smooth muscle and the bronchial tubes. it decreases pulmonary artery pressure and lowers the threshold of the respiratory center to CO2
onset
IV; less than 15 min
duration
4.5 hours
indications
severe bronchospasm when other sympathomimetics have been ineffective
CHF
contraindications

allergy to xanthine compounds (caffeine)
hypersensitivity to drug itself
cardiac dysrhythmias
adverse reactions (side effects)
palpitations, PVC, dysrhythmias, chest pain, tachycardia, seizure, N/V

500 mg/10 ml ampule
500 mg/20 ml ampule
250 mg/10 ml ampule
dose administration
N/B: loading dose: 5 mg/kg (if wheezing)
drip: followed by 0.5-0.7 mg/kg/hr (max 200 mg/min)
special considerations
monitor vitals closely
therapeutic to toxic ratio is narrow
medical control
