Amino Acids Flashcards
Functions of amino acids
- Building blocks of proteins
- Signaling (i.e. neurotransmitters)
- Precursors for other biomolecules
Parts of an amino acids
- alpha carbon (chiral; exists at D and L isomers; L is more common)
- carboxylic acids
- amino group
- R group (side chain)
Zwitterion
a molecule/ion with separate positively and negatively charged groups.
Dipolar Ion
Zwitterion – simple amino acids exist at zwitterions at physiological pH
How any different amino acids are found in proteins?
20
What are groupings of amino acids based on?
Side chains (R-Groups) properties
Side chain groupings
- Hydrophobic (non-polar)
- Negatively charged at physiological pH
- Positively charged at physiological pH
- Polar, neutral (overall) but charge is not evenly distributed
Hydrophobic/Non-Polar Amino Acid (9)
G (chiral) A V L I ("isomer" of isoleucine) M (think thiol) P (R group forms ring with amine) F W
Negatively charged Amino Acids at physiological pH
D
E
These amino acids have carboxylates in their side chains
Positively charged Amino Acids at physiological pH
K
R (Guanidinium)
H (Imidazole/imidazolium)
These amino acids have amine groups in their side chains.
Polar, neutral (overall) but charge is not evenly distributed
S (OH) T (OH) Y (OH) C (SH, sulfhydryl group connects amino acids, Disulfide bridges) N Q
What are Non-essential amino acids?
amino acids that we synthesize ourselves
Non-essential amino acids
Spy Danger qc
Arganine is a semi-essential amino acid
What are essential amino acids?
Amino acids we need in our diet (we don’t synthesize)
most plants do not have essential amino acids
essential amino acids
