Amines Flashcards
What are amines ?
Organic derivatives of ammonia with one or more alkyl or aryl groups bonded to nitrogen atom
What is the shape of ammonia ?
Slightly distorted tetrahedral shape
In ammonia what occupies one of the tetrahedral positions ?
A lone pair of non bonding electrons
What is the hybridization of nitrogen in ammonia ?
Sp3 hybridization
What are amines classified as ?
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
What are quaternary ammonium salts ?
They have four alkyl or aryl bonds to a nitrogen atom that bears a positive charge
Is an amine an electrophile or neucleophile?
Nucleophile
Why is an amine a Lewis base ?
Because it’s lonely pair of non bonding electrons can form a bond with an electrophile
Why can an amine act as a bronsted Lowry base ?
Because it can accept a proton from a proton acid
Why are arylamines weaker bases than simple aliphatic amines?
What reaction do amines undergo easily ?
Oxidation
How is air oxidation of amines prevented?
Converting the amines to their salts for storage or use as medicine
How is diazonium formed ?
Primary amines react with nitrous acid via the nitrosonium ion to give diazonium cations
Azo linkage
