Born in Virginia to wealthy land owning tabacco farmers + slave owners. He fought in the 7 years war, was elected to Virginia’s assembly + was it’s rep at the Continental Congress. Commander in chief of the Continental Army

1777 General Howe took Philadelphia + many began to doubt the army + Washington’s leadership
1 month later America defeated British at Saratoga inspiring France to join
Valley forge
After Philadelphia Washington regrouped at Valley Forge with 11,000 men for the winter.
Disease was rife in camp + 3000 died + 100s deserted
Washington won loyalty of troops by staying w/ them+pro prussian soldier Baron Von Steuben trained them
Victory at Yorktown
Americans won more battles + the Britain were confined to NY. In Yorktown 1781 the British were surrounded by American troops at sea + land. Cut off from supplies, they surrendered.
Results
Us grew to 50 states + Native American people/culture nearly destroyed
Inspired French + Ir rebellions
