Purpose Preambulation Activities

A

Provide safe and stable practice sessions. Improve pt’s ability to use ambulatory aids safely and effectively. Determine the type of assistive device needed. Allow the pt. to develop confidence.

Q

Parallel Bar Activities

A

Sitting to standing. Forward to backward. Alternate lifting hands from the bars. Push-ups to improve U/E strength. Simulate certain gait patterns.

Q

Axillary Crutches

A

Used when a pt. requires less stability than provided by a walker. Allow greater mobility, ambulation speed, and ability of performing various gait patterns.

Q

Forearm Crutches

A

Loft strand crutches. Used when the stability and support of axillary crutches are not required, but the pt. still does not need a walker.

12
Q

Parallel Bars

A

Each bar should be adjusted to provide 20-25 degrees of elbow flexion when the pt. grasps the bars 6 inches anterior to their hips. Bars level with the greater trochanter.

Q

NWB

A

Non Weight Bearing

17
Q

PWB

A

Partial Weight Bearing

18
Q

TTWB

A

Toe Touch Weight Bearing

19
Q

FWB

A

Full Weight Bearing

20
Q

Stance phase

A

When the L/E is in contact with the floor

21
Q

Swing Phase

A

When the L/E is not in contact with the floor.

22
Q

Four point Pattern

A

Requires use of bilateral ambulation aids. Uses an alternate and reciprocal forward movement of the ambulation and the patient’s opposite L/E’s

23
Q

Two point pattern

A

Requires use of a bilateral ambulation aid. Simultaneous reciprocal forward placement of the aid and the pt’s opposite L/E. Requires a lot of coordination.

24
Q

Modified four point or two point pattern

A

Using only one ambulation aid and for a patient with only one functional U/E

25
Q

Three point gait pattern

A

Requires bilateral aids or walker. Step to vs. step through patterns. Used when the pt. is FWB on one L/E, but NWB on the other.

26
Q

Three point modified pattern

A

FWB on one L/E but PWB on the other.
