Alkenes Flashcards
Alkenes
Unsaturated, reactive hydrocarbons
Unsaturated
Contains less than the max possible number of hydrogen atoms
Solubility of alkenes
Insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents
Making of alkenes
Can result in minor component or the more stable major component
Major component
Has the greater number of alkyl groups adjacent to double bond
Reactions of alkenes
Addition reactions, adding hydrogen halides result in the possibility of two components
Markovnikovs rule
Hydrogen attaches to the carbon that already has the greeter number of hydrogen atoms
Anti-markovnikov addition
Only applies to HBr because it contains some peroxide
Making alcohols from alkenes
React with diborane and then react with hydrogen peroxide and hydroxide ion, process is anti-markovnikov
