Airway and Intubation Flashcards
Name the 2 main methods of securing an airway/intubation
Endotracheal (ET) tubes
Supraglottic airway devices - V and I gels
Why do we intubate (protecting the 3 P’s)
Patient - protects the airway, maintains anaesthesia, allows the use of capnography, facilitates ventilation
Planet - allows us to minimised anaesthetic gas wastage, reduce GHG emissions
People - Prevents hazardous gases from polluting the room we are working in, economical and reduces gas wastage
Name the 2 methods we implement to reduce damage to the environment from anaesthetic gasses
Balanced anaesthesia - reduce amounts of inhalation agents needed
Intubation - minimises amount of gas escaping into the room
What does IPPV stand for
Intermittent positive pressure ventilation
(breathing for the patient)
If performing head surgery in a bird, where else can you intubate
Caudal air sac
Why is it so important to intubate reptiles under anaesthetic
Can tolerate very low O2 so often wont breathe under anaesthesia
Intubation is required to keep them anaesthetised
