Airport Signs Flashcards
How wide are both of these runway widths?
How wide is this runway?
How far are runway touchdown zone markers spaced apart, and how are they marked?
- 500’ apart
- if located at both ends and markings extend to 900’ of midpoint are eliminated.
What is in the circle?
- A runway threshold marking, and the width of the runway is indicated by the number of stripes on the threshold markings.
What are the 3 types of markings for runways?
- Visual
- Non precision instrument
- Precision Instrument
Which type of runway markings have touchdown zone markers?
- Precision Instrument Runway
You’re cleared to enter runway 34R for departure. Which way do turn for runway 34R?
Enter and turn right
What do the lines in the red box indicate?
- Enhanced centerline: Used for enhanced visual reference prompting pilot to prepare for a stop at the hold short line unless cleared into/across runway.
This indicates:
- Taxiway shoulder markings
What is this marking?
- Surface painted taxiway location and direction signs.
You’re cleared for takeoff on runway 9. Which way do your turn once your enter the runway for runway 9?
- Left. Direction signs are located on the side of the centerline to turn to get to desired direction.
Locate the displaced threshold and define what aircraft operations (takeoff, taxi etc.) are you allowed to perform within the displaced threshold?
- Taxi
- Takeoff
- Landing from opposite direction
- Do not land if approaching from displaces threshold area.
Locate demarcation bar and explain what it is.
Outlines a blast pad/taxiway the precedes a runway.
What is this sign?
- Geographic position markings
- used to identify aircraft located during low visibility operations
- The number corresponds to consecutive positions of the marking on the route.
What is an RSA?
It’s a runway safety area and pilot must get ATC clearance to enter RSA if at towered airport.
You look outside and see this marked on the ground. What does this sign mean?
It’s a VOR checkpoint station where you can check VOR instrument.
What is the EMAS system?
- Engineered Materials Arresting System
- Located at the end of the runway (blast pad area for takeoff)
- Designed for material to crush under the weight of a commercial aircraft
What does this sign indicate?
Runway distance left in thousands of feet.
What is a SIDA?
-Security Identification Display Area. Areas with a secure area; contact controlling airport to inquire.
What is this line across the runway mean?
It’s a taxiway hold line
Locate each taxiway
What do these lines indicate?
- ILS hold line on the bottom
- Runway Hold lines at the top
What does this indicate?
Destination signs to two common taxiways to each runway
Destination signs for 2 taxiways to 2 different runways
Destination sign to Military area
Taxi location sign with runway hold position
What is Runway Status Light (RWSL) System?
- It’s an automated light service system that does convey or substitute ATC clearance
- Located in ground, and ATC has limited control over the lights, and they cannot view activation/deactivations
What color are runway edge lights?
- White
- Yellow at the last 2,000’ of runway
Threshold lights are what color?
Bi-Directional Lights
- Green (for traffic on final)
- Red (for aircraft on ground approaching threshold)
What color lights delineate displaced thresholds?
Bi-Directional
- Yellow
- Red (for traffic on final)
note: Threshold lights are moved to the side of the runway in this case (green/red lights)
What color lights are taxiway edge lights?
- Blue
REIL lights:
-Runway End Identifier Lights: A pair of synchronized lights on the end of the runway
- aka: RTIL (threshold)
Color of runway centerline lights:
- White
- Alternating red/white the last 3,000’ to 1,000’
- Red 1,000’ - end
Touchdown zone lights
- Series of lights on both sides of centerline
- Extend from 100’ from threshold to 3,000’
What color are taxiway centerline lights?
- Green
Runway guard lights color:
- Yellow
- Located at runway holding positions
What are stop bar lights?
- Unidirectional in pavement red lights
- Stops aircraft from entering runway area
- Elevated red lights on both sides of the taxiway
- Used in low visibility conditions
- Can only enter if stop bar lights are off AND with ATC clearance
Lead on/off lights
- Bi-directional green/yellow from taxiway centerline to runway centerline
Rapid exit taxiway lights:
- Unidirectional lights on the runway for pilot to easily identify rapid exit taxiway
- To be followed by bi-directional green/yellow lead off lights
Required runway lighting systems are dependent on:
- The runway type
How wide is this runway?
150 feet
