Air Traffic Services (ATS) (4) Flashcards
What is meant by the term ANS?
Air Navigation Services
Services provided to Air Traffic during all phases of operations (approach, aerodrome and en route) and provided through Air Traffic Services.
What are the 5 Categories of ANS?
- ATM - Air Traffic Management
- CNS - Communication, Navigation and. Surveillance
- MET - Meteorological Services
- SAR - Search and Rescue
- AIS - Aeronautical Information Services
What are the objectives of Air Traffic Services?
- Prevent collisions between aircraft.
- Prevent collisions between aircraft on the manoeuvring area and obstructions on that area.
- Expedite and maintain an orderly flow of air traffic.
- Provide advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights.
- Notify appropriate organisations regarding aircraft in need of search and rescue aid and assist such organisations as required.
What is an Air Traffic Control Service?
Preventing collisions: Between aircraft.
On the manoeuvring area between aircraft and obstructions.
Expediting and maintaining an orderly flow of air traffic.
When and which Aircraft shall an ATC service be provided to?
- IFR flights in airspace Classes A, B, C, D and E.
- VFR flights in airspace Classes B, C and D.
- All SVFR (Special) flights
- To all Aerodrome traffic at controlled aerodromes
What is a Controlled Aerodrome?
To all aerodrome traffic at controlled aerodromes.
‘Controlled aerodrome’ means an aerodrome at which air traffic control service is provided to aerodrome traffic regardless whether or not a control zone exists.
What is an FIR?
Flight Information Region
An airspace of defined dimensions within which
flight information service and alerting service
are provided.
What is a FIS?
Flight Information Service
A service provided for the purpose of giving
advice and information useful for the safe and
efficient conduct of flights.
What is ALS?
Alerting Service
Provided to all flights KNOWN to an Air Traffic Service Unit.
Is a service provided to notify appropriate organisations regarding aircraft in need of search and rescue aid, and assist such organisations as required
In which portions of airspace are FIS and ALS provided?
FIR, CTR, CTZ, Controlled A/Ds
When is a VFR flight subject to an ATC service?
If the Airspace classification requires it
(Example - Class B)
What factors determine the need for the provision of ATS?
by consideration of the following:
- The types of air traffic involved;
- The density of air traffic;
- The meteorological conditions;
- Such other factors as may be relevant
What is meant by the term ATS?
Generic term meaning variously:
- Air Traffic Control Service.
- Air Traffic Advisory Service.
