Objectives of ATS
Prevent collisions
Expedite and maintain orderly flow of air traffic
ATS comprises of 3 divisions:
Atc service
FIS
alerting service
What is area control
Atc for controlled flights in CTA and en-route FIRs and UIRs
What is approach control
Atc for controlled flights associated with arrival and departure
What is aerodrome control
Atc to aerodromes traffic at controlled aerodromes
How accurate does a ATSU clock / timing device need to be
+/- 30 seconds
What is a AIRMET
Info for en-route weather phenomena which may affect the safety or low level aircraft not included in forecast already
What does ATIS stand for
Automatic terminal info service
What can ATIS be transmitted on
VOR frequencies
Not ILS
should be no longer than 30 second long
When is ATIS updated
Upon any significant change
When is cloud info given on ATIS
When cloud below 5000ft or MSA whichever greater
When CB cloud present (not TCU)
Alerting service is provided to
All ac provided with atc
All aircraft that have filed a flight plan
Hijacked aircraft
What is the RCC (rescue coordination centre) and sub units responsible for
Search and rescue only
What is the uncertainty phase (INCEFA)
No communication within 30mins
Ac doesn’t arrive at destination 30 mins after eta
What is alert phase (ALERFA)
When apprehension exists
Ac doesn’t land within 5 mins of issuing a landing clearance
Operating efficiency of aircraft has been impaired but no forced landing
Unlawful interference
