aims and hypotheses Flashcards
define an aim
a general statement of what the researcher intends to investigate
define a hypothesis
a clear, precise, testable statement that states the relationship between the variables to be investigated
name the different types of hypotheses
directional, non-directional, null, alternative
define the different types of hypotheses
directional - when a prediction has been given
non-directional - where a prediction hasn’t been given
null - when there is no relationship between variables in your hypothesis
alternative - the same as the experimental hypothesis (alternative to the null hypothesis)
what is the difference between aims and hypotheses?
an aim is only a general statement of what the researcher intends to investigate, whereas a hypothesis is a clear, precise and testable statement that states a clear relationship between the variables the researcher intends to investigate
