What is a Critical incident?
(i) a line of duty death;
(ii) a serious on-duty injury;
(iii) a disaster of mass casualty and / or incidents;
(iv) serious injury or death resulting from police operations; (v) death or violence involving a child;
(vi) incidents involving victims known by the member;
(vii) prolonged incidents, usually involving loss of life;
(viii) incidents with prolonged or intense media coverage;
(ix) a member taken hostage; or
(x) an incident involving the use or threat of a rearm.

Transition Services
is an informational group intervention utilized during or following large scale incidents or disasters, as members are released from the scene after their shift. At this time, a MHP or quali ed peer will take time, usually about 15 minutes, to provide information on the signs and symptoms of critical incident stress
Critalcal Incident stress debriefing
- A CISD is ideally held within 10 days of the critical incident, however can be held years after an incident and still be of benefit to those involved all persons directly involved in a critical incident are encouraged to attend whether or not they are individually affected as their attendance may assist affected colleagues
- Attendance is voluntary and all dicession is confidential except where a member is involved in criminal activity or poses a physical threat to themselves or others, then confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.
- When a CISD takes place, rank and seniority is not a factor. In addition, only members who have been directly involved in the incident shall be involved in the CISD. A CISD may involve other emergency services, such as fire, paramedics, emergency room nurses and/or doctos/ coroners
Responsibility of Supervisor
a. approach the members who were exposed to the critical incident and offer support if required
b. complete a YRP017 injured on duty form for members directly involved in a critical incident, as defined in this procedure
c. if services of the CISM Team may be of bene t to members involved in the incident:
I: liaise with a CISM team member to determine the appropriate type of intervention and
II: whenever possible, liaise with the CISM Team to assist in coordinating the intervention process
d. ensure that off duty activities for CISM team members are entered into Telestaff with the incident number or brief notes relating to the incident.
