What is a Police Vehicle Circle Check (engine bay)?

A
  1. All fluids will be checked wit the engine off. The vehicle should be parked on level ground.
  2. Members SHALL NOT remove the radiator cap. The engine coolant system shall be checked by observing the fluid level in the fill bottle located at or near the front of the engine compartment. Coolant must be added ONLY by strictly following directions set out in the owner’s manual
  3. Members shall only add the correct fluids as specified by the manufacturer
  4. where possible, the member shall check fluid levels visually, via the fluid bottle, without removing the cap or lids.
  5. All caps or lids shall be securely replaced by the members after fluids are added
  6. Brake fluid shall be checked by observing the level indicated in the brake fluid bottle. If the fluid appears to be below the MIN or minimum line, add fluid. Low fluid levels shall be reported to a supervisor or to fleet services immediately so that proper steps may be taken to correct the situation
  7. Transmission fluid SHALL NOT be checked
  8. Each vehicle is equipped with a maintenance-free battery. Battery checks shall be limited to the outside of the unit itself. Members SHALL NOT remove the cell covers to observe internal fluid levels.

Duties of a supervisor

A
  1. Ensure members have the appropriate training required to operate the vehicle.
  2. When notified that an audible seatbelt warning has been disabled. Identify the member who used the device, and determine why it was used. Then submit a YRP108A Sworn informal resolution report and notify command YRP002 to notify command a member was disciplined for its use.
  3. When notified of found damage to a police vehicle. Attend and assess the damage, review YRP002 and YRP245 vehicle damage report for completeness. Forward the forms to command prior to end of shift and forward YRP245 to fleet at fleet@yrp.ca
  4. Arrange for prompt repair to the police vehicle communications equipment through the technical support unit (TSU)
  5. Ensure that firearms and ammunition are returned to the long gun room for storage in accordance with procedure AI-009 safe storage of police firearms when police vehicles carrying firearms do not have a qualified member.
