universal process that begins at birth
age identity
someone’s perception of his or her age
perceived age
another person’s estimated age of someone based on appearances (correlates strongly with health and is a strong predictor of survival)
Chronological age
length of time that has passed since birth
Functional age
shift in emphasis from chronologic factors to such factors as whether individuals can contribute to society and benefit others and themselves, associated with higher levels of well being and more positive attitudes twoards aging
ageism
prejudices and stereotypes that are applied to older people sheerly on the basis of their age
Erickson’s theory of aging
Integrity vs despair- older adults look back on life and are either satisfied or regreftul. Has to do with identity- if identified self as their occupation, need to find new hobby for identity
Havighurst Theory of Aging
purposeful aging occurs when adults stay active and maintina social interactions. Positive relationship between activity and life satisfaction- help adjust to retirement. Find new identity
