Aggression Flashcards
What does the evolutionary approach say
Aggression is for gene survival and secure power. But many species don’t reward aggression and no evidence.
What does the psychodynamic approach say?
Conflicting human drives of Thanatos and Eros. Frustration builds up and targeted at someone.
Cue arousal theory
Study by berowitz
Environmental cues that are generated by frustrating situation. Aggression occurs if appropriate cues in environment.
Berowitz-participants given electric shocks. More shocks more anger. Give shocks back. If gun present and on table-more shocks.
Excitation transfer model
Arousal in one situation can carry over to another situation-residual arousal
Social learning theory
Learnt via operant conditioning
My observing others-
Gender differences
Men more aggressive-more testosterone.
Gender socialisation-gender appropriate behaviours.
Personality
Study by carver
Type A (ambitious) more susceptible to aggression. Carver-male undergrads exposed to confed who threatened sense of competence. Electric shock. Type A gave larger shock.
Other factors influencing aggression
Alcohol-individual differences. Alcohol blood level needs to be increasing for aggression. As arousal higher and cognitive functions lower.
Physical environment-higher temp, higher density and noise.
Social disadvantage
Cultural influences-difficult to test.
