Agents to Control Blood Glucose Level Flashcards
classification for glipizide:
sulfonyureas
glipizide mech of action:
stimulates insulin secretion from beta cells, increasing insulin levels, lower bs
glipizide contraindications:
conditions that predispose to hypoglycemia; sensitivity to sulfa
glipizide adv effects:
weight gain, skin rash, nausea, epigastric fullness, heartburn
glipizide interactions:
beta-blockers, DPP4 inhibitors, sulfonamide antibiotics, herbs (3 g’s), diflucan
Insulin Lispro classification:
fast-acting
for a diabetic pt, wjat should the HbA1C be?
less than 7%
Does the client need to eat after fast acting insulin?
yes IMMEDIATELY; typically given at meal times
sliding scales are based off of what?
BS results
metformin classifications:
biguanide
metformin mech of action:
decrease the production of glucose by the liver, decrease intestinal absorption of glucose, increase uptake of glucose by tissues, do not increase insulin secretion from pancreas
metformin missiclaneous:
most common type 2 oral drug, lactic acidosis rare but lethal if it occurs and does NOT cause hypoglycemia
meformin contraindications:
renal disease, alcoholism, metabolic acidosis, liver disease, HF
meformin adv effects:
abdominal bloating, nausea, cramping, diarrhea, metallic taste, reduced B12 levels
meformin interactions:
cimetidine, diuretics, corticosteroids, comtrast media
