Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) Flashcards
what are the layers of the macula?
choroid
Bruch’s membrane
RPE
photoreceptors
which layers of the macula does drusen appear between?
RPE and Bruch’s membrane with atrophy of RPE and degeneration of photoreceptors

age
smoking

two types of ARMD
- wet ARMD
2. dry ARMD
what is wet ARMD?
new vessel growth in the choroid layer stimulated by VEGF
what does the new vessel growth cause/risk?
haemorrhage
leakage causes build-up of blood and fluid which can cause scarring
presentation of wet ARMD
rapid central vision loss reduced visual acuity metamorphopsia (bends in doorframes) scotoma/blind-spot pale compared to rest of fundus haemorrhages exudates
diagnosis of wet ARMD
snellen chart amsler grid fundoscopy OCT scan fluorescein angiogram
management of wet ARMD
anti-VEGF intravitreal injections
what is dry ARMD?
build-up of drusen under the RPE which pushes on choroid blocking flow. retina becomes atrophic
presentation of dry ARMD
gradual decline in vision
drusen and atrophic patches
orange streaks (choroidal blood vessels showing through)
diagnosis of dry ARMD
ophthalmoscope
OCT
management of dry ARMD
lifestyle
supportive e.g. magnifiers
