Aerodrome ATSU provides 3 types of Comms services
Full ATCU
FIS
Air-Ground Service
In aerodromes in controlled airspace with CTR Zones
Pilots will be under the control of ATCU
- for ACs in the vicinity of the CTR zone - APPROACH
- ACs flying into the circuit, approaching, and taxing and departing - GROUND/TOWER
Opertating on the following Frequencies:
GROUND
TOWER
APPROACH
In aerodromes not in controlled airspace with ATZ
An aircraft
must not take off, land or operate within the ATZ unless it obtained the permission of the responsible Air Traffic Service Unit
(ATSU) to do so
The ATUS could either be:
a) full ATCU
b),AFIS (only provide information ‘INFORMATION’
c) Air Ground comms “RADIO’
AFIS (INFORMATION)
not authorized to give clearances or instructions in Air
but can give instructions on ground
AGCS (RADIO)
not authorized to give clearances or instructions in Air or ground
How does Phraseology differe betwee all 3 ATSU services
Most qualified is
ATCU
(licensed by Av. Authority)
followed by AFIS
(licensed by Av. Authority)
followed by AGCS
NOT licensed, has basic certificate
ATCU - GROUND
For ground movement (Manoevring Area runway/taxi + apron) such as:
- AC moving to Aprons
- AC vs Vehicle movement
- Obstructions
- AC on manoevering areas (except active runway)
Pilot will request the following from GROUND:
* Initial call to depart from aerodrome
* Request clearance to taxi
* Request Engine start clearance
Pilot on ground should do this first..
1) should select the ATIS frequency to obtain the latest weather info, runway in use, QNH, etc..
this is to help ease the load off the Ground station.
if ATIS isn’t available, then conttect to GROUND to get the info
if you got the info from ATIS, then when you make the call to start departure or start engline. You must mention the ATIS alphabet message
Typical ATIS message looks like:

initial contact with Air Traffic Control, confirm the QNH and information Mike

information.

G-JM, Runway 32, Wind 290°, 8 knots, QNH 1015, Temperature
AC

STart Engine Call
here you need to mention where the aircraft is parked

G-ABCD, Steerton Ground, Start up approved.

if there is a delay in departure, the ATCU will communicate the time to start up
What is the Taxi clearance limit
A clearance limit in taxi instructions in the
point at which the aircraft must stop until the pilot receives further permission to proceed
(usually the runway in use holding point)
Example of taxi instructions/holding point
AC:

parking area, Request taxi for VFR local flight, Information Mike
GS:
G-ABCD, Taxi for Runway 23 via Taxiway Charlie to Holding Point
Delta 1, Call approaching Holding Point Charlie, QNH 1010, Time

Take Off on active runway
(gets handed to TOWER)
