Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise Flashcards
Aerobic exercise
Exercise in the presence of oxygen
Training zone: 60% - 80% of maximal heart rate
Low to moderate intensity, for long periods of time (e.g marathons, long-distance swimming, endurance cycling)
Aerobic respiration is the body’s preferred way of working because it produces a lot of energy and is produced without any harmful by-products, but needs enough time for the body to fully breakdown glucose
Anaerobic exercise
Exercise in the absence of oxygen
Anaerobic training zone: 80% - 90%
High intensity for short periods of time (e.g sprinting, short-distance swimming, shotput)
Lactic acid is one of the main causes of fatigue, and can lead to cramping
Examples of both aerobic and anaerobic exercise
Football, netball, basketball
Team games usually have periods of aerobic and anaerobic exercise
