AE102 Flashcards
Lift and Drag
What is Equilibrium?
Absence of acceleration (linear or angular)
When does equilibrium exist?
Sum of all forces + Sum of all moments around center of gravity = 0
Describe equilibrium in straight and level flight
At constant velocity when thrust is equal to drag and lift is equal to weight
Describe equilibrium not in straight and level flight
In a climb or descent, it occurs when lift equals the ‘perpendicular’ component of weight and thrust is equal to the sum of drag plus the ‘parallel’ component of weight
What are the examples of accelerated flight conditions (2)?
Takeoffs and Turns
What defines an accelerated flight condition as opposed to unaccelerated, level flight conditions?
Accelerated flight conditions occur when opposing forces are not balanced
