What are orientating questions?
Problem Focused Assessments to gather information on the client’s situation
What are influencing questions?
used to invite change in the client’s perspective and counsellor elicits minimal information about their concern as focusing on solutions
What is reframing?
supporting a client to understand a situation in a new light with new awareness
Why do we use reframing?
- presenting an expanded view of the situation
- reframing behaviour in an adaptive way
- expanding perspectives of self
What are the things to be mindful of is reframing?
not implying agreement or support for the problem
What is challenging?
involves listening to the client and seeking to help the client examine self or situation more fully
Why do we use challenging?
- increase their self-awareness
- highlight discrepancies that clients have previously been unaware of
- space for exploration
What are the things to be mindful of in challenging?
- not offered judgementally or reprimanding
Why do we use self-disclosure?
- helps client feel like they’re not alone
- reduce power differential and intimidation
- provides validation
- builds rapport and trust
What are the things to be mindful of in self-disclosure?
- moving focus away from client
- compromising professional relationship
- getting too involved or pressuring the client
What is externalising?
identifying feelings and reflecting those feelings back to the client; viewing the problem as separate to the person
Why do we use externalising?
- the problem is the problem, not the person
- people’s own knowledge is fore-ground
What are the things to be mindful of in externalising?
- it is intentions and theoretically underpinned
what is exploring of options?
using an open question to facilitate exploration of options
Why do we use exploring of options?
- when clients make preemptive conclusions that there is “no solution” or only two polar possibilities
