Adrenergic Medications Flashcards
Alpha 1 Agonists do what?
Vasoconstriction = Increase BP, decongestion
Alpha Agonist Examples
Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, dopamine, phenylephrine
Alpha 1 Agonist Side Effects?
HTN, necrosis, bradycardia
Alpha 1 Agonists Contraindications?
If a patient is HTN, Bradycardic, PBH, or long time use for CAD.
Alpha 2 Agonists MOA
Produce inhibitory effects on the adrenergic receptors by vasodilating vessels
Alpha 2 Agonists on the CNS
Inhibit sympathetic activity (sympatholytic)
Vasodilation
Can reduce the release of Epi and Norepi
Clonidine does what?
Lowers BP/helps with ADHD r/t CNS depression
Methyldopa does what?
Lowers BP + can be used in pregnancy r/t no fetal harm (no decrease in HR)
-osin is the suffix for?
Alpha 1 Antagonists
Alpha 1 Antagonist S/E
Dizziness, HA, Ortho hypo, reflexive tachy, ED, weakness, first dose effect*** (leading to Ortho hypo)
Alpha 1 Antagonist Indications
Blocking alpha receptors! Decreasing effect of alpha receptor activation
Mechanism of Action of Beta 1 (Blockers) Antagonists
Bind to Beta 1 and inhibit Epi and Norepi on site causing
- Decreased inotropy & chronotropy (squeeze of heart and rate
- Increased relaxation (Increased filling)
-olol is the suffix for what medication?
Beta (Blockers) Antagonists
Generations of Beta Blockers
Gen 1: Nonselective
Gen 2: Cardioselective
Gen 3: Beta Blockers with vasodialating Effects (think lungs)
Beta 1 Blocker S/E
Bradycardia
Decreased CO (slow titration)
AV Heart Block
Rebound HYPERtension/tachycardia
Beta 2 Blocker S/E
Bronchoconstriction
Hypoglycemia*** r/t glycogenolysis
Bradycardia
Beta 1 & 2 Blockers in S/E in neonates
Resp distress
Hypoglycemia
Monitor closely for 3-5 days
Therapeutic Use of Beta Blockers
Angina, MI/Post Mi, HTN, Arrhtmias, HF, Migraine prevention, Anxiety/Stage fright, Pheochromocytoma, Glaucoma
Alpha 2 Agonists Side Effects?
REBOUND HYPERTENSION w/ abrupt d/c of clonidine - MUST wean slowly
anything else associated with chollinergic actions
Treatment of choice for anaphylaxis?
Epinephrine d/t its activation of all 4 subtypes (A1, A2, B1, B2)
Beta 1 Agonists MOA
Increases HR, contractility, cardiac conduction
Beta 2 Agonists MOA
Primary for pulmonary disorders
Albuterol (Beta 2 Agonist) does what if taken in large doses?
Loses selectivity, may impact beta 1 receptors causing tachycardia, dysrhythmias, and angina.
