How does the army seize, retain and exploit the initiative?
By striking the enemy both lethally and no lethally in time and places when the enemy is not prepared
What is seizing the initiative?
Setting and dictating the terms of action
How does the seizing the initiative affect the enemy?
It degrades the enemy’s ability to function as a coherent force?

Operations conducted to defeat and destroy enemy forces and seize terrain, resources and population centers

Movement to contact, attack, exploitation, and pursuit
What are defensive operations?
Operations conducted to defeat the enemy attack, gain time and develop conditions favorable for offensive and stability tasks
What are the types of defensive operations?
Mobile defense, area defense, and retrograde
What are stability operations?
Military missions conducted outside the US to maintain a safe and secure environment and provide essential government services and humanitarian relief
What is combined arms maneuver?
The application of the elements of combat power in unified action to defeat enemy ground forces and to achieve advantages over the enemy
What is wide area security?
The application of the elements of combat power in unified action to protect to deny the enemy positions of advantage in order to retain the initiative
What is operation?
A military action consisting of two or more related tactical actions designed to achieve a strategic objective
What is tactical action?
A battle of engagement, employing lethal or non lethal action
What are the characteristics of an army operation?
Flexibility Integration Lethality Adaptability Depth Synchronization
What is planning?
Understanding a situation, envisioning a desired future and laying out effective ways of bringing about that future
What are troop leading procedures?
A process used by small unit leaders to analyze a mission, develop a plan, and prepare for an operation
What does preparation consist of?
Activities that units preform to improve their ability to execute an operation
What is execution?
A plan in action by applying combat power to accomplish the mission and using situational understanding to asses progress to make executive decisions
What is assessment?
Continuously monitoring and evaluating the current situation and progress of an operation
What is an area of operations?
Operational area defined by joint force CDR for land and marintime forces that should be large enough to accomplish their mission and protect their forces
What is an area of interest?
An area of concern to the CDR.
What is the the main effort?
The designated subordinate unit whose mission at a given point in time is most critical to overall mission success
What are supporting efforts?
Designated subordinate units with missions that support the success of the the main effort
