Discharge Against Medical Advice

A
  • It is a patient right to leave.
  • Nurse can’t detain a competent client who wishes to leave before being discharged.
  • The health care team is responsible for making sure the patient is making an informed decision.
  • The team can sometimes talk the patient into staying by answering questions, attending to complaints.
  • Sometimes just presenting them with the AMA form, they and explaining it will change their mind.
  • If they refuse to sign the form,
  • You need to document that.
