Q

Q

What does methadone do?

A

Stimulates same receptor sites as heroin but in a milder way so they don’t get high - prescribed increasing amounts to build up tolerance before it is decreased to wean them off it completely

16
Q

Kim and Grant?

A

Significant decrease in gambling thoughts and behaviours 6 weeks after naltrexone

17
Q

Biological interventions treating symptoms not the cause?

A

Davidson et al

18
Q

Davidson et al? (2)

A

Questioned whether substance abuse problems should be treated by giving another substance to people - they just switch dependence

19
Q

Contradicting evidence for effectiveness of biological interventions to addiction?

A

Blanco et al

20
Q

Blanco et al?

A

No superiority for SSRIs over placebos (32 gamblers over 6 months)

21
Q

Side effects of biological interventions for addiction?

A

E.g. methadone = insomnia, sexual dysfunction -> drop outs

22
Q

Safety of biological interventions for addiction?

A

UK statistics authority

23
Q

UK statistics authority?

A

Methadone was responsive for over 300 deaths in the UK in 2007 due to overdose or use with other drugs
