Adaptations and Diversity Flashcards
What diverse wise is different between natural reproduction and cloning?
Cloning: No diversity
Reproduction: Diversity
What are Adaptations?
A characteristic of a living thing which helps it to survive and reproduce in its environment.
What are the different types of adaptations..
- Structural
- Behavioral
- physiological
What is a behavioral adaptation..
A behavioral mechanism of an organism. eg Changing colour
What is a structural adaptation.
a description of the organism that aids in the environment.
What is a physiological adaptation..
a feature of the animal which aids in survival. eg producing different substances.
The close relationships between species…
Symbiosis.
The four main types of symbiosis..
Parasitism, Mutualism, commensalism, amensalism
What is Parasitism?
One species benefitting from the other species.
What is Mutualism?
Both species benefit from each other.
What is Commensalism?
One species benefits from the other but neither species are harmed.
What is Amensalism?
One species is harmed and the other neither benefits nor is harmed.
What is Competition?
Where 2 organisms require the same resource and have to fight for it.
What does density mean in food web terms?
Number of individuals per unit area.
What are Keystone species?
A species with a large effect on the ecosystem despite it only being small in numbers and/or distribution.
