Aetiology/risk factors
A
Aetiology: Caused by atherosclerosis causing STENOSIS of the arteries
Risk factors: Male, age, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolaemia, history of chronic limb ischaemia

Symptoms:
A
Sudden onset

Investigations
A
- Ankle brachial pulse index (ABPI)
- CT angiogram
- Doppler ultrasound
- Pulse examination (look for pulseness)

Treatment:
A
- Address any risk factors
If the limb is salvagable then:
Embolectomy
If the limb is not salvageable then:
Amputation
Palliate
Other treatments include:
IV heparin
Thrombolysis
Vascular bypass (if embolectomy unsuccessful)
