Aetiology/risk factors

A

Aetiology: Caused by atherosclerosis causing STENOSIS of the arteries

Risk factors: Male, age, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolaemia, history of chronic limb ischaemia

Investigations

A
  • Ankle brachial pulse index (ABPI)
  • CT angiogram
  • Doppler ultrasound
  • Pulse examination (look for pulseness)

Treatment:

A
  • Address any risk factors

If the limb is salvagable then:
Embolectomy

If the limb is not salvageable then:
Amputation
Palliate

Other treatments include:
IV heparin
Thrombolysis
Vascular bypass (if embolectomy unsuccessful)
