Active transport Flashcards
What are transport proteins?
They catch hold of a molecule on one side of the membrane. Turn around using energy and release it on the other side. Only carry specific molecules and not others.
What is Active Transport?
The movement of substances across a partially permeable cell membrane against their concentration gradient which requires the use of energy from respiration.
Cells that carry out Active transport usually have ?
Lots and plenty of Mitochondria
As the rate of respiration increases
So does the rate of active transport
E.g. 1
Moving mineral ions from the soil into plant roots. Moving nitrate ions from lower concentration in the soil into higher concentration inside the root hair cell.
E.g. 2
Glucose is always moved out of the small intestine and kidney tubules against a large concentration gradient.
