What is locked in syndrome?
Rare neurological condition associated with lesions of the ventral pons
What is locked in syndrome most commonly associated with?
Stroke = more commonly that TBI
What are some features of locked in syndrome?
Complete anarthia and tetraplegia
Generally intact cognitive function and arousal
Can have sleep wake cycle disturbance
What tend to be the only motor abilities preserved in locked in syndrome?
Vertical eye movements and blinking
What is the role of occupational therapy?
Promote and restore purposeful activity = analyse activity and the underlying reasons for inactivity
What is the aim of occupational therapy?
Restore activity and/or manage dysfunction to enable the individual to regain skills and engage in activity meaningful to them
What are the elements of PADLS?
Toileting, dressing, grooming, showering, eating/drinking and transfers
What different elements make up a treatment programme?
Personal care, domestic tasks, physical skills, community transport and graded upper limb rehab
What are some aspects of physiotherapy?
Balance re-education and pain management
Tonal management = weight bearing exercise, joint range maintenance, stretches, medication
What is the aim of art therapy?
To work with patients in group and individual art sessions and facilitate/encourage participants in their individual creativity
