Acids Flashcards
what is an acid
a proto donor
what is a base
a proton donor
what is an alkali
soluble base produce OH- ions in water
give examples of weak acids and what are they defined as
ethanoic acid and carboxylic acids
only partially dissociate into its ions in solution
give examples of strong acids and what are they defined as
HCL, H2SO4, HNO3 fully dissociate into its ions in solution
give examples of strong bases
NaOH and KOH
give examples of weak bases
NH3
what do you call acids which can donate more than one proton
polyprotic
when a acid reacts with a base what does it produce
salt and water
when ammonia reacts with acids what is formed
ammonium salts
what is produced when metals react with acids
salt and hydrogen
what is produced when metal hydroxides react with acid
salt and water
what is produced when metal oxides react with acids
salt and water
what is produced when metal carbonates react with acids
salt, CO2 and water
what is the equation that links moles, conc and volume
moles= conc x vol
what colour is phenolphthalein in alkaline and acid
alkali-pink
acid-colourless
hat colour is methyl orange in alike and acid
acid-yellow
alkali-red
how do you make up a standard solution
weigh mass of solid on balance using weighing boat
transfer solid to beaker and wash weighing boat with distilled water
dissolve the solid fully in water and stir
transfer the solution inti a volumetric flask and rinse the glass rod and beaker
fill the volumetric flask up to the graduation line with distilled watering use a pipette
invert to mis thoroughly
