Q

Discuss acid-base compensation?

A

If the primary acid-base problem is metabolic, the compensatory mechanism is respiratory (usually altered within minutes)
And vice versa
Metabolic compensation by the kidneys for a respiratory acid-base problem usually takes place over several days
