Acid Base Balance Flashcards
Neutral
A solution with a pH of seven; the solution contains equal numbers of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions
Acidic
A solution with a pH below seven; in this solution, hydrogen ions predominate
Basic or alkaline
A solution with a pH above seven; in this solution, hydroxide ions predominate
Acid
A substance that dissociates to release hydrogen ions, decreasing pH
Base
A substance that dissociates to release hydroxide ions or to tie up hydrogen ions, increasing pH
Salt
And ionic compound consisting of a cation other than hydrogen and an anion other than a hydroxide ion
Buffer
A substance that tends to oppose changes in the pH of a solution by removing or replacing hydrogen ions; in body fluids, buffers maintain blood pH within normal limits
Strong acids and strong bases
Dissociate completely in solution. For example, hydrochloric acid, a strong acid, dissociates in a solution by the reaction HCL➡️H+Cl
Carbonic acid is a weak acid. At the normal pH of the ECF and equilibrium exists and the reaction is
H2CO3 ↔️ H + HCO3
