Acculturation Flashcards
What is acculturation?
a process of psychological and cultural change as a result of contact and interaction between cultures. Changes in culture are both psychological and cultural. This process most commonly occurs between dominant and nondominant cultures. This can change both the dominant and nondominant cultures.
What does research studies look at regarding acculturation?
Research studies pertaining to acculturation look at how cultures change as a result of migration and the resulting contact with other cultures.
Why is acculturation almost bound to happen in some way?
As a result of globalization it is almost near impossible to not have contact with other members outside of one’s culture.
What are the four strategies for cultural change?
- Assimilation
- Integration
- marginalization
- Seperation
What is Assimilation?
when people are open to change and are not concerned with the loss of their original culture and seeking interaction with cultures other than their own in which they adjust their behaviour, attitudes and beliefs.
What is integration?
people want to hold onto traditional values and beliefs but they still want to interact with cultures other than their own. This can only be pursued by non-dominant groups when the dominant society is open to cultural change
What is separation?
when people value their original culture and does not want contact with other cultures
What is marginalization?
these people don’t care too much about maintaining their original culture but at the same time have little interest in opening relations with other cultures.
Other aspects of acculturation?
healthy migrant effect and negative acculturation effect.
What is healthy migrant effect?
concept that recent migrants tend to be healthier than their native born counterparts
What is negative acculturation effect?
the diminishing difference between migrants and their native born counterparts over time
What two studies can be used for acculturation?
