What is environmental design?
-criminologist argue that the built environment can affect the level of crime in 2 ways:
-by influencing potential offenders eg presenting them with opportunities to commit crime
- by affecting people’s ability to exercise control over their surroundings.
-they also argue that agencies eg builders town planning and local councils can design “crime out” by changing the physical layout of an area
What is defensive space
-Defensible spaces are areas where there are clear boundaries so it’s obvious who has the right to be there.
-Newman argues that there are areas that have low crime rates because of 4 things: territory, surveillance, a safe image and a protected locations
What is an indefensible space?
Where crime is most likely to occur in what he calls “confused” areas of public spaces such as anonymous walkers and stair wells belong, corridors are observed by no one.
What is ASBOS? (Anti social behavior order)
- used to stop anyone aged 10 or above to stop harassing, causing harm or distress to other people who are NOT in the same household.
-an order can be issued for 2 years and lists what they must stop doing.
-an order contains conditions prohibiting the offender from specific antisocial acts or entering defined areas. If breached you can be fined.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of ASBOS
Advantages:
-it encourages individuals to take responsibility for their behaviour.
-it improves quality of life for local people in the area and tackle behaviour.
Disadvantages:
-2000-2013 58% of people who received the order 58% breached which can suggest it does not work.
What is CBO (criminal behavior order)
Is an order designed to tackle the most serious and persistent anti social individuals where their behaviour has brought them before a criminal court.
It is an offence to breach the terms of the CBO And can be up to 2 years in detention. Centre of under 18 and up to 5years in prison or an unlimited fine (or both) if the individual is over 18.
