What is the philosophy of the judiciary?
judge must be loyal to the King (Monarch is figurehead of legal system),
must apply the law equally to every person (promise to do so)
What are the two oaths that the judge’s swear on?
Oath of allegiance- (loyalty) to king and his successors
Judicial oath- treat all people equally, with impartiality according to law
What are the aims and objectives of the Judiciary?
interpret and apply law to cases
In Crown Court-
manage trial, ensuring fairness to all parties, explain legal issues to members of jury
Appeals court-
make rulings on appeals which come before them from lower courts in hierarchy
How much do senior judges earn?
Around £262,000
How much do district judges earn?
Around £112,000
What is the pay of the judiciary based on?
Advice of an independent body- Senior Sales Review Body, make recommendations to Prime Minister on how much judges should be paid
What do the position of judges reflect?
the importance of maintaining their independence so they can uphold law and defend rights of citizens
