What does the crime control model see?
Sees crime as a threat to people’s freedom
What is the goal of the crime control model?
The suppression of crime
What does it prioritise?
Catching and punishing offenders, deterring and preventing them from committing further crimes
What does the model start from?
A presumption of guilt- trusts the police to identify those who are probably guilty through investigations and interrogations
What happens once the probably guilty are identified?
Favours a conveyor belt/assembly line justice system that speedily prosecutes, convicts and punishes them
What is argued about a few innocent people being accidentally convicted?
It’s a price worth paying for convicting a large number of guilty people
What does this model emphasise?
The right of society and victims to be protected from crime
What theory does the crime control model use?
Right-wing conservative approach (Right Realism)
What is an example of areas of a law that support the crime control model?
Evidence of previous convictions is permitted on some circumstances
‘Double jeopardy’ allows second prosecution if new and compelling evidence emerges
What is an example of a case involved using the crime control model?
Barry George- accused of killing Jill Dando 1999
High-profile murder- police wanted to secure conviction quickly
Evidence was circumstantial- was found guilty
2008- acquitted due to new forensic evidence
