How does imprisonment meet the aims
Life sentences:
- Most offenders with these sentences serve 15-20 years
Indeterminate Sentences - IPPs:
- Sentences with no release date
(Serves public protection)
- John Warboys was convicted of rape, when he was scheduled for a release people complained and he was kept in prison
Determinate Sentences
Given a fixed term with a release date
Most serious form of punishment

How does community sentences meet the aims
Community sentences are:
- 40-400 hours of unpaid work
- a curfew (ankle tag 🥸)
- group programs - anger management
- alcohol / drug prevention
There are also financial penalties which the Magistrates can imposed fines up to £5000 for one offence / £10,000 for 2

How do discharges meet the aims
A conditional discharge is used for a first time minor offence and is used to deter commuting further crime, allows for sanctions (THOSE WHO ARE FAMILIAR TO THE SYSTEM ARE MORE LIKELY TO REOFFEND)
An absolute discharge is when no penalty is imposed, when an offender is guilty but is morally blameless

financial penalties are fines the Magistrates can imposed of up to £5000 for one offence / £10,000 for 2
This depends on the circumstances of the crime and the offence itself
Factors that can influence the penalty is the persons financial situation
- a rich guy won’t be affected by £1000 fine so it needs to correlate
