Explain forms of social control
What are the 2 forms of social control
- internal
- external
What is an internal form of social control
controls over our behaviour that come from within ourselves
What are the types of internal forms of social control
- tradition
- rational ideology
- internalisation of social rules
Why does rational ideology stop us from committing crime
we conform to society’s expectations because our conscience tells us to, will make us feel guilty about wrongdoing so exercise self-control to avoid negative feelings
e.g not shoplift as would feel guiltyW
Why does our tradition stop us from commiting crime
culture we belong to becomes apart of us through socialisation, accept its norms and values
e.g. believers follow religious traditions they have been raised in
Why does internalisation of social rules stop us from committing crime
rational ideology and traditions we follow become part of our personality, both of these come from parents values (superego) or culture
e.g. wouldn’t jump the queue because been taught to join the end
What is an external form of social control
control over people exacted by society and societal agents of social control
What are the types of external forms of social control
- fear of punishment
- coercion
Why does coercion stop us from committing crime
using threat of force to make someone do something, physical or psychological force
Why does fear of punishment stop us from committing crime
type of coercion, if commit offence will be arrested, charged, convicted and jailed. fear acts as a deterrent
What is Hirschi’s control theory
people don’t commit crime because of
- commitment- jobs
- involvement- sports, hobbies
- attachment- families, friends, children
- beliefs- socialisation, religion
without these leads people to commit crime
